How to verify your Startup India (DPIIT) credentials

Last updated: October 2026 · by FounderKendra Advisory Desk · 5 min read

DPIIT recognition is the credential that makes the rest of the startup ecosystem reachable: the Section 80-IAC tax holiday, patent fee rebates, self-certification under labour and environmental laws, public procurement exemptions, and eligibility for the Startup India Seed Fund. The application itself is free and quick. Almost all of the effort goes into the two steps before it — and that is where most founders lose a month.

The five steps

  1. Incorporate an eligible entity

DPIIT recognition is only open to a Private Limited company, an LLP, or a registered partnership firm. A sole proprietorship cannot apply, so if that is your current structure you must incorporate first. Complete name reservation, director KYC and the incorporation filing through the MCA SPICe+ portal, which issues your Certificate of Incorporation, PAN and TAN together.

  2. Establish a commercial registered office address

The MCA requires registered-office proof: a rent agreement or ownership deed, the owner's No Objection Certificate, and a utility bill dated within two months. A residential address frequently fails bank or officer verification, because landlords decline to sign an NOC. A compliant commercial virtual office provides the complete document set and removes that risk before you file.

  3. Register on the Startup India portal and link your CIN

Create an account on startupindia.gov.in and complete the startup profile as the authorised representative. Enter your Certificate of Incorporation number so the portal can validate your entity against MCA records. Keep the director details and registered-office address identical to the MCA filing, because a mismatch between the two datasets is the most common cause of a stalled application.

  4. Submit your innovation write-up and supporting documents

Write a short, specific narrative covering the problem, your solution, and how the business is innovative or scalable. Generic descriptions delay review, so name your actual product and market. Attach your Certificate of Incorporation, the registered-office documents and authorised-representative details, then submit the application for recognition on the portal.

  5. Receive your DIPP certificate and display the badge

Once recognised, the certificate downloads from the portal and your startup becomes eligible for the Section 80-IAC tax holiday, patent fee rebates and the Seed Fund. On Sangam you can then submit the recognition number in your profile, and our team verifies it before the DPIIT Recognized badge appears on your member card.

What the recognition unlocks

A recognised startup can apply for a 3-year income tax holiday under Section 80-IAC, claim an 80% rebate on patent filing fees and 50% on trademark fees, self-certify compliance under six labour laws and three environmental laws for up to five years, and bid on government tenders without meeting prior turnover or experience criteria. It is also the prerequisite for the ₹945 Crore Startup India Seed Fund Scheme.

Where founders actually get stuck

Step 2 is the bottleneck. A residential registered address creates problems that surface later — a bank hesitating during physical verification, a landlord unwilling to sign an NOC, a GST officer re-questioning the premises. Fixing the address properly before incorporation costs less than correcting it afterwards, because moving a registered office means filings and fees.

The ₹11,000 / 11-month Virtual Office pack provides the rent agreement, owner NOC and electricity bill at our Tower C, Golden I, Greater Noida premises, usually within 48 hours. The CA-partnered advisory desk handles incorporation and the DPIIT filing sequence alongside it, and Sangam HQ All-Access is included free with the pack.
